About the Authors
Bill Norman and Shelley Johnson-Norman are the authors of The Enviable Lifestyle; Creating a Successful Massage Therapy Business.
Bill and Shelley, experiencing life in corporate management jobs, both turned 40, made the conscious decision to change their lives, go back to school and learn massage therapy. After graduating from the massage therapy program they opened a small massage therapy business called Kneaded Energy®, located in Greensboro, North Carolina.
They were "All-In". There was no turning back. What they didn't know about business they found out from the people they needed to help them. They hired a business coach, they hired a personal coach, they talked to the local entrepreneur center, and they consulted with a financial advisor. They downsized their home and living expenses, joined networking groups, read everything they could find about business, found a retired CPA to help them with their budget...and forged ahead until they not only learned enough to become one of the most successful massage therapy businesses in the southeast - but more importantly, until they turned a profit. From this single massage therapy business they have been able to expand and form other lucratrive streams of income that compliment their original business.
Bill and Shelley wrote this book from having interviewed therapists across the country who contacted them to find out how they could also make their practice profitable. Bill and Shelley realized the although they were working with a healing modality that was thousands of years old, they were also forging relatively new ground in the world of massage businesses by creating a privately owned, multi-staffed business with the same basic characteristics of any high demand service; professional, available, convenient, affordable, with employees. They realized that each massage therapy business they contacted was really a reflection of what that massage therapist wanted - not really what the client or customer wanted, and although that worked fine for each therapist, it still left them asking: How do I build my business to be bigger and make it more profitable? This 1st book addresses these concepts.
Bill and Shelley have taught business and ethics for the past 7 years with massage therapy programs in and around the Greensboro area. They are certified national providers of continuing education courses that are targeted toward Business and Marketing and Ethics.
In 2010, Bill and Shelley opened the Kneaded Energy School of Massage. Their Professional Massage Therapy Diploma Program offers a 625 hr North Carolina approved curriculum with a focus on helping students learn to be successful therapists in business, whether their choice is to pursue self employment or employment with an established practice.
